Summer Updates Regarding Curriculum Documentation

This summer, the district finished the multi-year work of updating all of our curriculum to meet the newly adopted NJSLS by approving over 30 new curriculum documents.
As you may know, the State of NJ Department of Education initially adopted NJSLS 2020 standards in seven content areas in June of 2020, and then established a two-year schedule for district-wide implementation by Fall 2022, which was ultimately undermined by the pandemic taking much of the focus away from curriculum updates to focus on safety.

Content areas that were updated in the latest revision cycle include:

Below you can see
a comprehensive list of which curriculum was updated or written this summer and approved by the Riverside Township School District Board of Education at the August Board Meeting. After each listing by content area, you will see a short summary of what (specifically) was updated or created to better understand how significant or minor the changes have been.

Comprehensive Health and Physical Education Curriculum Approved

All curriculum noted in blue received moderate updates to reflect the updated standards, which occasionally affected pacing, sequencing, and depth of coverage. 

With the additional questions raised this summer regarding Health topics in grades 2 through 5, please note that the NJDOE and RTSD recognizes and respects that some families prefer to have certain conversations privately. Pursuant to N.J.S.A. 18A:35-4.7. (Parent's statement of conflict with conscience), 

Any child whose parent or guardian presents to the school principal a signed statement that any part of the instructions in health, family life education or sex education is in conflict with his conscience, or sincerely held moral or religious beliefs shall be excused from that portion of the course where such instruction is being given and no penalties as to credit or graduation shall result therefrom. L.1979, c. 428, s. 2, eff. Feb. 11, 1980
